This seminar will cover aspects of the mammalian immune system including:
1. Details of the innate and adaptive immune systems
2. Mucosal immunity overview
3. Review of the cellular components of the immune system
4. Description of PAMP’s and TLR’s
And, will cover:
1. Early discoveries of immunological properties
2. Immune modulation response in ruminants
3. Stress and pathogen challenge models

7:30 – 8:30 p.m. “The Role of Calcium and DCAD Diets for a Healthy
Transition in Lactating Dairy Cows” – Troy Wistuba, Ph.D.,
Dairy Technical Manager, Prince Agri Products, Inc.


This seminar will cover aspects of the transition cow period and the role of calcium during that time.
1. Physiologic changes during the transition period
2. Reported incidence of hypocalcemia (Reinhardt et al., 2011)
3. Relationship of blood calcium and metabolic disease
4. Discussion of subclinical hypocalcemia and its associated costs
5. Managing Hypocalcemia through nutrition.
